Climb Mount Kilimanjaro
ATP and Shields & Stripes have teamed up with K2 Adventures to create an experience that will help you find the best version of yourself.
Travel with us and you will immerse yourself in one of the most incredible places and cultures in the world. Safety is our first priority. K2 Adventure Travel guides have led expeditions in more than 20 countries on six continents. With a summit rate of 96%, our ability to manage complex and changing endeavors is proven. Our guides are NOLS Wilderness First Responder certified, along with CPR and first aid training. On the mountain, we employ professionally trained and screened guides and have evacuation procedures in place for any participant who needs them.
Adventure Begins in Arusha
Located at the foot of the world famous Mt. Kilimanjaro, Arusha is a mid-sized city known for it’s low-key atmosphere and overall cleanliness. While the main attraction is Africa’s tallest mountain, your time in Arusha will include one of a kind volunteering opportunities that will bring you closer to the locals and make you feel like a part of this wonderful city, its culture and its people.
Although Arusha is one of the most developed cities in Tanzania, it continues to struggle with crippling levels of poverty and meager living conditions. Children are disproportionately affected, and many of them are left to survive in the streets due to extreme poverty. ATP supports a local orphanage called Summit Happy Home to provide displaced and orphaned children with a safe environment, proper accommodations, essential medical care and much needed food & clothing. Just as importantly, we want them to experience what it is like to be treated with dignity and kindness. This orphanage launched in 2019 with 10 children ranging in age from 2 to 6 years old. The last two years we have begun development of an “adventure zone” including the construction of a rock climbing wall, slackline, and a 30 ft. tire balance beam.
The Magnificent Mt. Kilimanjaro
Mt. Kilimanjaro’s snowy peak is a sight to behold. Rising over 19,000 ft. scaling this giant is no small feat. While only half of those who attempt to reach its peak make it, our success record stands at 96%! In short, you are in the best of hands.
Machame trail on Mt. Kilimanjaro
Our hike will be on the Machame trail on Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Tanzania and Africa. Mt. Kilimanjaro has three distinct volcanic cones, two of which are extinct and one that could erupt again. It lies within the 756 square km Kilimanjaro National Park, one of the few places on earth that encompasses every ecological life zone—tropical jungle, savannah, desert, montane forests, and alpine zone. Get ready to see one of the most magnificent views of the Milky Way you’ve ever seen. The view alone is worth the trip!
Surrounded by a Sea of Clouds!
The climb itself is steady rather than exhaustive, but challenging nonetheless. As you ascend, you’ll literally walk through every ecological life zone possible making you feel like you’re in a completely different place from one day to the next.
Once you reach the summit, you can look out over the world and experience a sense of accomplishment that few ever will. It feels like you’re standing at the top of an island surrounded by a sea of clouds!
